Leads the Yoga+ division at Center for Pain and Supportive Care
Julie Burch leads the Yoga+ division at Center for Pain and Supportive Care (CPSC), Arizona’s only pain center with an on-site yoga studio dedicated to treating patients with chronic and cancer-related pain. CPSC Yoga+ offers a slow and gentle way to help ease pain, prevent future symptoms and injury, improve daily functioning and balance and address the emotional triggers of pain.
Burch completed a master’s degree in education in 2001. A stress fracture in her low back prompted her to seek out yoga. Soon she realized that the benefits of yoga stretched far beyond healing her physical pain, liberating her from insomnia, ruminating thoughts, anxiety and the stresses of being a teacher. Seeing that she could empower herself and others through yoga inspired her to change careers. She went on to complete a 200-hour certification with Clearwater School of Yoga in Las Vegas and a 500-hour certification with Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy. After leading yoga classes for students, faculty and athletes as a teacher, Burch moved to Arizona in 2011 to join CPSC as a yoga and educational specialist.
Her 15 years of experience teaching psychology and sociology and practicing a wide range of yoga styles has given her insight and a foundational knowledge of how physical, emotional, mental and physicological strains interrelate, and ultimately affect behaviors, attitudes, habits and relationships. Pulling together her experiences allows Burch to facilitate Dr. Stearns in a whole-person approach to patient care using a combination of traditional yoga breathing, mental focus, relaxation, education, discussion and physical movement to bring about an improved overall wellbeing. As a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner, Burch further helps support Dr. Stearns’ vision of treating the whole-person by addressing psychological component of pain alongside the physical components. Through a blend of gentle movement and dialogue, clients are guided into verbally and physically releasing trauma, stress, old habits, anxiety and depression.
