Synopsis:
Opioids are commonly used to treat chronic painful conditions. These medications have untoward side effects in patients who have had a prior cholecystectomy including non-obstructive bile duct dilation and spasm of the sphincter of Oddi. The case presented illustrates the unfortunate effects that resulted from the use of a morphine pro-drug in a patient with a prior cholecystectomy that required the use of emergency medical services and a hospital admission to ensure patient safety. Through this experience, we emphasize the importance of taking an accurate and complete medical history before prescribing certain opiate medications.
